Information and guidance for pursuing AuD and PhD degrees
AuD/PhD Pathways
There are several routes to obtaining both an AuD (Doctor of Audiology) and PhD degree. Understanding these pathways can help you make informed decisions about your educational journey.
Simultaneous Programs
Some institutions offer joint AuD/PhD programs where students pursue both degrees concurrently. This pathway typically takes 5-7 years to complete and allows for integration of clinical training with research methodology.
- Efficient use of time by completing both degrees together
- Coordinated curriculum that bridges clinical and research training
- Often includes funding support throughout the program
- Requires careful time management and dedication
- Students develop both skill sets simultaneously, allowing for immediate application
Sequential Programs
Many professionals complete one degree before pursuing the other. This can be done in either order: AuD first, then PhD, or PhD first, then AuD.
- AuD then PhD: Gain clinical experience before focusing on research. Clinical insights can inform research questions and make you a more effective researcher.
- PhD then AuD: Develop research expertise before clinical training. Strong research foundation can enhance evidence-based clinical practice.
- Allows for work experience between degrees, providing perspective and clarity on career goals
- May take longer overall but offers flexibility in career development and financial planning
- Opportunity to explore each field deeply before committing to the other
Same vs. Different Institutions
Students may complete both degrees at the same institution or attend different schools for each degree. Each approach has distinct advantages:
- Same Institution: Established relationships with faculty, familiarity with resources, potential for streamlined processes, consistent mentorship throughout your training
- Different Institutions: Exposure to diverse perspectives, broader professional network, varied research experiences, opportunity to work with different equipment and methodologies
Funding Opportunities
Various funding mechanisms support students pursuing AuD and PhD degrees. Understanding these options early can help you plan your financial strategy:
- NIH F31: Predoctoral fellowship for PhD students. Provides stipend and tuition support.
- NIH F32: A postdoctoral fellowship. There is a specific F32 mechanism for AuDs.
- Institutional Funding: Teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and departmental scholarships vary by institution.
- Professional Organizations: AAA, AAS, and other organizations offer student scholarships, travel awards, and/or research grants.

Planning Your Journey
As you consider your path to obtaining both degrees, reflect on these questions:
- What are your long-term career goals? (Academic research, clinical practice, industry, hybrid roles)
- What funding opportunities are available to you?
- What institutions offer programs aligned with your research interests?
- Are there geographic or personal factors that influence your decision?
- Do you want to work between degrees, or continue your education without interruption?
